The goal of the grant is helping farmers markets make changes to their marketing and sales after being impacted by the pandemic.

Using a General Use Grant from Compeer Financial’s Fund for Rural America, the Illinois Farmers Market Association will provide mini-grants to offset COVID-19 operating costs and technical assistance to help get markets open safely and marketing strategies to gain customer confidence and sales.

“In Illinois farmers markets are an essential business,” said Janie Maxwell, of the association. “Farmers markets are reporting increased costs and decreased operating income. The longer markets are delayed, the less revenue and operating funds generated for market organizations, and less revenue for producers. Getting farmers markets running safely in 2020 is critical.”

The Illinois Farmers Market Association was founded in 2010 to connect the Illinois farmers markets, market managers, producers and consumers, and provide coordinated resources, advocacy, technical services, and training to ensure the vibrancy and sustainability of Illinois farmers markets.

The association is one of 29 organizations receiving General Use Grants, totaling $181,200. General Use Grants fund initiatives and organizations whose work enriches the agriculture and rural America, aligning with Compeer Financial’s mission. For this cycle, priority was given to projects centered around COVID-19 relief efforts that aligned with the goals of this grant program.

In total, the grants will directly impact the lives of 135,851 people and will touch 840,023 lives.
